Bournemouth's sister cities Poole and Christchurch date back to Anglo-Saxon times, or even further, but Bournemouth itself is a relatively late development. The name dates back more than 600 years and referred to the mouth of the River Bourne (a small stream), but at the time it referred to a section of uninhabited heathland. Meanwhile, fossil evidence suggests that parts of present-day Bournemouth, such as Hengistbury Head, may have been inhabited in prehistoric times.
